Quantum Physics and
Reality
I am hardly a
physicist, but it's important to be aware of the theories
behind most of the self help and self improvement information
that is circulating today, so I am offering a brief overview.
Quantum physics and/or quantum mechanics is the study of the
smallest particles or subatomic particles that make up all
matter. Even smaller than the electrons, protons and neutrons
you studied in high school. Turns out, these smallest particles
did not "behave" the way scientists thought they should, which
was the logical Newtonian-type of physics. They change and move
in ways that are difficult to measure. For example, light can
exist in more than one state: a particle or a wave. Einstein's
Theory of Relativity showed how basic concepts like mass,
energy, space and time are all related.
OLD THEORIES BLOWN APARTThese
discoveries (and the experiments that followed) have challenged
some of these theories:
- The belief that the only way objects can be influenced
is through direct contact.
- Time only moves in one direction so that
cause-and-effect sequences occur in that order
- Space and time are smooth. It does not "jump
around".
SO WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO
US?Since our assumptions of the smallest particles
of matter did not follow the logical and practical theories,
then our assumptions of reality may not follow those theories
either. In fact, "Beam me up, Scottie" and "warp drive" may
actually be possible.
Of course, these new discoveries have spurred new theories
about reality. One of these theories is that consciousness
creates reality. Not many of the mainstream physicists believe
in this theory, but enough do to start experiments.
Most of the self help and self improvement products today (and
earlier - note Wallace Wattles book of 1910 in the
Freebie section) agree on the theory that we can (and do!)
actually create our reality by how and what we think. It is
possible to consciously create what we want in life by changing
our thoughts. They also believe that there are universal laws
that govern how this is possible.
The study of what constitutes reality is fascinating and sure
to change and evolve in the years to come. I look forward to
expanding my awareness and continued studies.
